Before we tell you about that, listen to the story of the Crimson Moss!

Amidst the muted greens and browns of the peatland, a vibrant crimson presence stands out, like a beacon in the gloom. This is the red Sphagnum moss, a resilient and adaptable guardian of the wetland's secrets.

Its velvety crimson hues are a testament to its strength, a natural sunscreen that shields it from the harshest rays. Like a cloak of protection, the moss's pigments absorb and dissipate the light, ensuring its delicate fronds remain unscathed.

Within its spongy embrace, the red Sphagnum moss holds the very lifeblood of the bog. Its water-bearing capacity is unparalleled and a vital reservoir that quenches the thirst of the surrounding flora and fauna. It is the heart that pulses, keeping the ecosystem alive and flourishing.

As the moss slowly decomposes, it weaves a tapestry of peat, layer by layer, creating a dense and nutrient-rich foundation for the entire community. This ancient process is the moss's legacy, a testament to its enduring presence and its role as the keeper of the wetland's history.

Yet, the red Sphagnum is more than just a physical entity; it symbolises resilience and adaptability. In the face of environmental challenges, it stands firm, its vibrant hues a defiant declaration of its will to thrive. It is a reminder that life can persist and flourish even in the most unforgiving of conditions.

Gazing upon the crimson guardian, we are humbled by its quiet strength and ability to nurture and sustain the delicate balance of the peatland.

This is how our journey began, a few years back. Drawing inspiration from the biogeochemical cycle of the forest floor, two textile designers started studying the fallen leaves, debris and duff, their modular structure, rhizoid attachment, regenerative potential, and adaptability of rootless mosses, to gain valuable insights to guide the development of disassembly-focused textile products. This approach led to the creation of more sustainable, circular, and versatile textile designs that mimic the principles observed in nature. Thus 'Metaphors of Earth' was born.
